"Love looks not with the eyes but with the mind." -- A Midsummer Night's Dream (I, i, 234)
The Savannah Shakespeare Festival's 2008 production, Shakespeare on Love, is set for May 17, 2008 in Forsyth Park. In its 22nd year, the Savannah Shakespeare Festival will showcase Savannah’s vibrant and diverse theatre arts community in performances celebrating one of the world’s most beloved and influential dramatists.
Arguably the most popular outdoor theater event in the area, the Savannah Shakespeare Festival returns each year in May to the city's famous Forsyth Park. Savannah's Department of Cultural Affairs funds the festival, and the City Lights Theatre Company performs. Past plays have included As You Like It, Twelfth Night, Othello, Julius Caesar and Macbeth. Performances are in the evenings, and picnicking is encouraged so bring a blanket, a picnic basket, and even a bottle of wine, and sit back under the spring sky for a little Shakespeare in the park. Admission is free.
Festival director Jin-Hi Soucy Rand stated that this year’s production will be a collection of scenes, songs and sonnets by William Shakespeare on the topic of love, performed by local theatre and spoken-word organizations. Groups represented at this year's festival will include: Abeni Cultural Arts; All Walks of Life (AWOL); City Lights Theatre Company; Ensemble Con Spirito, Little Theatre Company of Savannah; Cardinal Repertory Theatre; Savannah Children's Theatre; and Spitfire Poetry Group.
“This is a community celebration of the performing arts,” said Rand in a recent press release. “As such, our partnering organizations are offering many unique opportunities for local performers to showcase their talents and gain experience in Shakespearean Theatre.”
