The Friends of Johnny Mercer Website Recognized

(SAVANNAH, GA) The website for The Friends of Johnny Mercer, Inc., www.friendsofjohnnymercer.com, recently received an honorable mention in the "New Media and Web Design: Website, Public Service/Non-Profit" from the 38th Annual Creativity Awards. The site was created by Angela R. Horne, an Assistant Professor of Art at Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah and proprietor of ARR Designs, based in Statesboro GA.

Horne, who received both her bachelor's and Master's degrees from Georgia Southern University, worked with Dianne Thurman of The Friends of Johnny Mercer and Caroline Hopkinson of the AASU Lane Library to create the site. The Lane Library is the repository for the Mercer Family Collection.

"It was important for me to create a unique online experience for The Friends of Johnny Mercer," said Horne. "I wanted it to be memorable, easily navigated and something the main audience of Johnny Mercer fans could relate to." Horne also found the letters in the Lane Library which had written by Mercer to his mother "touching and inspiring".

Horne, who is a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor of Art at AASU, also "wanted to create a bit of nostalgia, seen mostly in the imagery of the postal documents and by special treatment of type and visual textures." She teaches a range of graphic design and computer art courses as well as manages the MAC computer lab on the University campus.

This year's Annual Creativity Awards program, based in Louisville KY, received a record 2,800 entries from over 44 countries and 45 U. S. states. The winners are determined by a jury of advertising and design professionals from some of the United States' most prestigious design firms and showcased in the 400-page Creativity Awards Annual published in each February. Winners will be honored at the 1st Annual Creativity Awards Gala in Louisville later this year. The Creativity Annual Awards program was established in 1970.
